The 21st Century Violence Prevention Movement!
THE VISION
An Atlanta that THRIVES without Violence!
THE MISSION
To support and advocate for evidence-based and innovative violence prevention strategies and initiatives.
A UNIQUE HISTORY
The Metropolitan Atlanta Violence Prevention Partnership (MAVPP) was founded in 2006 by Dr. James Parker Griffin, Jr., a professor at the Morehouse School of Medicine Prevention Research Center. It was established as a scientifically credible response to acts of violence, such as the beating death of Bobby Tilman in Douglas County and the kidnapping and rape of two twelve-year-old girls in the Pittsburgh Community. For the first time in Atlanta's history, representatives from community and faith-based organizations, education, media, and leading government officials joined together to address the prevention of violence, which they recognized as a common concern.
